In July 2013, a vegetable garden was created in the village of Klang Leu, on the initiative of Augustin, a university student volunteering from La Rochelle, France. All the children, who were supervised by volunteers Carine, Léovic and Claire, were given the task to clean and clear the plot lent by a villager. After hard work of preparing the ground during the rainy season, various vegetable seeds were planted. The resulting crops were shared among all the families of the village. This initiative aimed at providing fruit and vegetables to children suffering from nutritional deficiencies due to the lack of diversity in their daily diet (mainly rice). The result exceeded all expectations: parents and children alike became actively involved in this initiative.

Here is the testimony of Peanich 8 months after the project started :

“Hello Anne, Carine, Léovic, Augustin.
We have good news from our garden. We have gained a lot of experience planting vegetables.
… Today we harvested our vegetables to give to the children and their families. Most of their relatives are very happy to join us because they now understand our purpose for gardening.
They are also starting to help us with it.
Even after sharing the vegetables with all the families, we still had some Morning Glory left, so this morning we are bringing the children to sell it in the market. I estimate that they will get more than $5. We will soon re-plant and hope to earn enough money to buy seeds, organic fertilizer, and pay for our water bills. We want to start making compost too. The main benefit from this project is not just eating more vegetables and earning money. Many children are getting more experience about how to sell and manage a small business.
